An excellent remake of a classic Vic 20 and Commodore 64 roguelike. Much simpler than Rogue or Nethack but it has an elegant charm to it. Check it out here.

Sword of Fargoal is a dungeon adventure game published in 1983 through a Silicon Valley game company called “Epyx,” famous for pioneering adventure games such as “Temple of Apshai” and others. A newly released computer called the Commodore 64, which boasted a whopping 64K of RAM, changed everything for computer gaming history … and so the story began!

Your Quest Begins!

The misty powers of magic have settled over the Great Forest lands, twisting, swirling into every nook of the village of Ferrin. Evil spells wisp about like fog, draining courage and trust from the hearts of men.

Good magics have vanished, and no longer are there brave warriors who wield weapons of steel against the land’s enemies. The Protectorate Sword is gone!

What does the Eye of Larn see in its guardian?

Welcome home adventurer. Latest word from the doctor is not good. The diagnosis is confirmed as dianthroritis. He guesses that your daughter has only 300 mobuls left in this world. It’s up to you, adventurer, to find the only hope for your daughter, the very rare potion of cure dianthroritis. It is rumored that only deep in the depths of caves can this potion be found.

Town of LarnHere comes a classic! One of the first games in roguelike genre is Larn. It has even poorer “graphics” than Rogue because it utilizes only three colors (and third must be activated in options file). Despite that many players enjoyed it. Current maintainer is Copx, who ported Larn to Windows and fixed a few bugs present. I played version 12.3 which still has some problems that 12.4 does not.

Sangband 1.0.0 Final

Sangand Red Dragon CrestUpdate from the *bands front: the Sangband mantainer is proud to announce version “1.0.0 Final” of the game.

Main feature of Sangband is its “intense character development”, which is all Skill based instead of Exp-based; it works really well, and the choices you make really affect the way you can play your adventurer.

Congratulations to its mantainer, Leon Marrick, for achieving the much elusive 1.0.0!

There are many ways to die. There are many ways to die. The choices you make among skills, the plunder from vaults and fallen foes, the objects you forge, your growing tactical prowess – all will shape your adventure.

GearHead2 v0.422, The Universe keeps Expanding

GearHead MechaGearHead2, the roguelike game of inertia space mechafighting and random plots, in development by Joseph Hewitt, is got another in-dev release. It is good to see the game is still alive!

I’ve just uploaded v0.422 to SourceForge and updated the roguelikedevelopment page. The big change this time around is the rewriting of the RPG mode mecha arenas. Currently, there are two- one in Maquise Spinner, and a second at Cayley Rock.

DoomRL 0.9.8.7!

DoomRL LogoAfter some playtesting on the official ChaosForge forums, yet another enhanced version of DoomRL has seen the light!

Quoting the official announcement

The time has come to delurk again, and present the world with another release of DoomRL! This is a intermediate release on the long and winding road towards DoomRL 0.9.9. Some of the features that I wanted to push intothis release have beed delayed, but fear not, theres still a couple of things to try out!

The most important part are interface changes, including (but not limited to) message coloring, past message viewer, archivising of mortems in a separate folder, screenshots in plaintext at BBCode format.

Gameplay changes include adding weapon modifications, Mancubi, new level types and new traits. Finally there’s the backpack ;). A lot of changes also happened in the old traits, including a lot balance work. Balance work has been done on other aspects of the game also.
